Jatinga Ka Patinga
Yes! That’s exactly how I feel — like a patinga (moth) in Jatinga. I’ve been staying in a small outhouse resort, very close to the Bird Suicide Centre here in Jatinga. I’ve been well-fed on a steady diet of fish, chicken, and paneer, along with lots of dal and roti. The food in this part of the world has done me good — it’s not too spicy, always fresh, and well-cooked. Some friends have even said that I’ve lost weight! I think it’s the overall vibe — the rains, the clean air, and the simple diet — that have kept me in good health and spirits as I wander across the Seven Sister States of the East, exploring their hills, waterfalls, lakes, and high mountain viewpoints.

The East has truly been a revelation — peaceful, cool, and simple. The people have been wonderful, and I haven’t had a single unpleasant experience so far. Even though I’ve travelled to far-flung places and remote villages, I’ve always felt safe.
The trick is to get friendly with the locals — be polite, generous, and chatty — and everything else falls into place. The afternoons can get quite warm, and the sun rises early, but there’s always a nip in the air by evening and a definite chill at night. I was told the best time to see the birds is between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, so I’ve booked a small cab to take me to the Bird Suicide Point.

Life here feels slow and relaxed. The villages and towns are small and sparsely populated.
I just ordered a plate of mutton rice — it’s a lazy afternoon, and the sun is shining over Jatinga. I really do feel like a moth drifting through the wilderness of this strange, beautiful place — so quiet, remote, and timeless. The city of Haflong, however, is moderately sized, and my outhouse is located there. There are banks, shops, hospitals, and pharmacies around, and autos and cars are easily available for hire to visit the Bird Suicide Point — where the mysterious bird phenomenon occurs.
The yearly Jatinga Festival is scheduled for the 8th of November. If I’m in the mood, I just might go for it.
