Elephant Falls – The Cascading Jewel of Shillong
Nestled just a short drive away from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, lies one of the most iconic and picturesque waterfalls of the region – Elephant Falls. Surrounded by lush greenery, flowing in three distinct stages, and echoing with the thunder of falling water, Elephant Falls is not just a natural wonder but also a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike.
Elephant Falls
I had a light and simple lunch of rice, beans, and fish curry with thick gravy, along with potato chips. This was a typical regional meal. For the past few days, I have kept my diet mostly vegetarian—it’s best to remain fit when traveling in such places.
The name Elephant Falls was given by the British after they saw a massive rock here that resembled an elephant. Although the original rock was destroyed over a century ago, the name has remained.
Locally, the Khasi people call it Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew, meaning “the three-step waterfall”, since the water cascades down in three distinct layers, each with its own unique character.
The Three Cascades
The First Fall – A broad, gentle fall, almost hidden by thick vegetation, creating a curtain-like flow of water.
The Second Fall – A thinner, more vertical cascade tumbling down rocky cliffs with force, revealing the wild spirit of nature.
The Third Fall – The grandest of them all, plunging dramatically into a deep pool. It is especially spectacular during the monsoon season when the volume of water swells.
A well-maintained trail with steps and railings takes visitors through all three stages, offering perfect viewpoints for photography and relaxation.
Best Time to Visit
Elephant Falls is at its most majestic during the monsoon season, when the water flows with full strength. However, even in the winter or spring months, the charm of the falls lies in its tranquil setting, cool breeze, and the lush pine forests surrounding it.
Cultural Charm Around the Falls
There are shops and a small restaurant where visitors can eat and relax as the cool water gushes down. The entire area feels green, fresh, and tranquil. Outside, locals in traditional attire can often be seen, and sometimes they even play local instruments.
I’ve managed to find a comfortable two-bedroom house in the fields. The locals have been serving me food—fish, dal, roti, rice, and tea. The only cigarette available here is Gold Flake. The hills are lush green, and it has been raining all day. This part of the world is wild, wet, and breathtakingly beautiful.
The locals are warm and welcoming. I even made a video of my room. I feel very much at peace, spending the day writing about my travels. It’s a deeply fulfilling and sweet feeling.
Physically, the locals are short and lean, with wrinkled brown faces and long black hair. They are simple but very well-equipped to look after guests like me. My driver has been extremely helpful, and I am enjoying my stay.
Next, I look forward to reaching Cherrapunji—the beginning of another adventure!
Final Thoughts
Elephant Falls is not just a waterfall; it is a place where nature and culture meet. The cascading waters, the lush greenery, and the tranquil environment soothe the eyes and calm the soul. The vibrant green landscape feels almost intoxicating with its freshness.
Being this close to nature is deeply relaxing and enchanting. Elephant Falls is truly one of the jewels of Meghalaya.
