Trekking to the Top of Kalo Dungar – The Black Hills of Kutch
There is something magical about standing at the highest point in Kutch and looking out over the endless horizon. My trek to Kalo Dungar — famously known as the Black Hills — was not just a physical climb, but an experience filled with raw desert beauty, local flavour, and breathtaking silence.
The Road to the Black Hill
As I approached the iconic blue sign that reads, “Welcome to Kalo Dungar,” I felt a surge of excitement. The dry terrain stretched endlessly on both sides of the road. The air was warm, the sky impossibly blue, and the landscape carried that rugged Kutch character — sparse bushes, dusty earth, and wide open skies.
The journey itself felt cinematic. A quiet road cutting through the wilderness, occasional army vehicles in the distance, and the feeling that you are heading somewhere remote and powerful.
A Taste of Local Kutch
Before heading further up, I stopped at a small roadside stall. The banner boldly read, “Kutch nahi dekha toh kuch nahi dekha.” And honestly, it could not be more true.
Kalo Dungar
There is something charming about these local tea stalls — packets of snacks hanging from strings, steaming chai brewing in steel kettles, and that simple hospitality that defines Gujarat. A cup of hot chai in the middle of this vast desert landscape tasted better than any café experience. Travel in Kutch isn’t just about landscapes; it’s about the people and their warmth.
The Trek and the Climb
Though vehicles can go up most of the way, there’s still a sense of trekking as you walk and explore the hilltop area. The incline is gentle but steady. The higher I climbed, the stronger the breeze became.
At the summit lies the famous Dattatreya Temple, perched dramatically at the edge of the hill. From here, the view opens up to something extraordinary — the shimmering white expanse of the Great Rann of Kutch. It looks surreal, almost as if the earth dissolves into the sky.
The View That Stops Time
Standing there, I felt incredibly small. The vastness of the Rann is humbling. The salt flats stretch so far that the line between land and sky almost disappears.
The silence up there is powerful — not empty, but deep. The kind of silence that makes you reflect. Wind rushing past. Sunlight bouncing off the pale landscape. A few travellers clicking photos, and beyond that, just stillness.
Why Kalo Dungar Is Special
Kalo Dungar is the highest point in Kutch, and because of that, it offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Gujarat. But beyond geography, it offers perspective.
In a world filled with noise, this hilltop gives you space — to breathe, to think, to simply exist.
Final Thoughts
My trek to Kalo Dungar was more than just reaching a destination. It was about the journey — driving through rugged roads, sipping chai in the desert, feeling the wind at the summit, and staring out into infinity.
If you ever visit the Kutch region, don’t miss this experience. Because as the stall banner wisely says, “Kutch nahi dekha toh kuch nahi dekha.” And after standing atop Kalo Dungar, I could not agree more.
