Tucked within the older quarters of Indore, not far from the echoes of Rajwada and the hum of bustling markets, I discovered a place where devotion feels deeply personal — Sri Banke Bihari Mandir. This was not just another temple visit; it felt like stepping into a space where time slows down and the divine feels close enough to touch.

As I entered, the first thing that struck me was colour — deep reds, gold embroidery, fresh marigold garlands, and intricate decorations around the idols. At the centre sat Lord Krishna in his Banke Bihari form, surrounded by other beautifully adorned deities.

The idols were dressed like royalty.

Every detail felt lovingly arranged. A priest performed rituals quietly, almost rhythmically, as if continuing a tradition that has never paused.

Like many sacred spaces in Indore, this temple reflects the influence of the Holkar dynasty. Built in traditional Maratha architectural style, it features wooden pillars, carved balconies, and an open courtyard — designed to feel intimate rather than monumental.

Though not as famous as its counterpart in Vrindavan, the temple carries the same essence — bhakti over grandeur.
