Pobitora Wildlife Resort in Mayong
Just a short drive from Mayong lies the beautiful Pobitora Wildlife Resort, a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. I had the entire afternoon to explore this enchanting sanctuary, home to the majestic one-horned rhinoceros and a rich variety of birds, doves, and even crabs that swim gracefully through its many ponds.
A jeep safari here costs around ₹2300, and a valid ID is required to purchase entry tickets to the sanctuary. As we entered the dense, emerald-green forest, the landscape unfolded like a living painting—lush marshes, quiet ponds, and open meadows. At first, all I could spot were grazing cows. Then, our jeep came to a sudden halt, and my driver asked me to look up.
Pobitora Wildlife
There, perched high among the branches, were three magnificent brown owls, perfectly camouflaged amidst the leaves. One was busy preening its feathers while the others watched silently. I managed to capture a few lovely shots on my new iPhone 17 Pro before we moved deeper into the forest.
As we drove further in, the surroundings grew quieter and more mysterious. Soon, we entered a stretch of river-washed grasslands—and that’s when I finally saw it. A rhinoceros, calm and regal, was grazing peacefully in the distance, with two doves resting comfortably on its back.
My excitement doubled when I spotted three more rhinos just a short distance away. I clicked a few close-up pictures before they trotted off across the marshy land, disappearing into the tall grass.
What makes Pobitora truly unique is its proximity to Mayong, a village steeped in ancient tales of tantra, mysticism, and healing chants. The combination of wildlife adventure and cultural mystery gives the region an unmatched allure—an experience that feels both primal and spiritual.
Though smaller than Kaziranga, Pobitora’s compact size actually works in its favor. Within a single safari, you’re likely to see rhinos grazing in the open, wild buffalo wandering through fields, and birds filling the sky with sound and motion.
The rhythm of the wild here is slow, calming, and deeply intimate—a perfect retreat for anyone seeking to reconnect with nature. Pobitora is a must-visit sanctuary for travelers exploring the mystical lands of Mayong.
