My Visit to Lierie Baptist Church
Kohima is a city of hills, churches, and stories tucked away between its steep ridges. One quiet morning, I walked into Lierie Ward, a lively part of the city, to visit the Lierie Baptist Church. It is a place of worship that might not appear in glossy travel brochures, but it carries the heartbeat of the community that surrounds it.
The first thing that caught my eye was the big blue signboard stretching over the road, proudly announcing:
LIERIE BAPTIST CHURCH
It felt like a gateway into a neighbourhood woven together by faith, simplicity, and everyday mountain life.
A Church Built into the Heart of the Hills
The church building rises along the slope like a gentle giant — simple, sturdy, and functional, very much in tune with the character of Kohima. A large red cross crowns the top of the structure, standing tall against the clear blue sky. It isn’t ornamental or extravagant, but it carries a sense of sincerity and devotion that you can’t miss.
Around the church, the familiar rhythm of Kohima moved along — taxis passing by, people chatting at roadside stalls, houses stacked across the hillside in neat clusters. The energy of the place is real, grounded, and authentic.
Walking Through the Sky Bridge
One of the most unique features of this church is the covered sky bridge that connects sections of the building. Its long metal walkway, framed with simple beams and a translucent roof, felt almost symbolic — a bridge between the world outside and the calm within.
As I walked through it, I could see glimpses of the neighbourhood through the panels — a mix of modern structures and traditional homes climbing up the mountainside. It’s rare for a church to have such an architectural element, and it added a distinct charm to my visit.
The Entrance and the Clock Above
At the entrance doorway, a large clock hung above the arch, silently marking the time for the congregation. Something about it felt grounding — a reminder that faith and time coexist here, quietly shaping the life of the community.

The church doors were closed when I arrived, but even from outside, you could feel the reverence the structure holds for the people living around it.
The Stunning View of Kohima
Stepping out to the edge of the church compound, I was rewarded with a magnificent view — Kohima stretched out like a living mosaic, colourful houses spilling down the slopes, framed by the rolling Naga Hills in the distance. The view alone made the visit worth it.
Kohima truly looks like a layered city — one that builds itself upward and outward with every ridge.
A Slice of Local Faith and Life
Lierie Baptist Church may not be the largest or most famous church in Kohima, but it is deeply meaningful. It represents the everyday spirituality of the residents. There are community gatherings and Sunday worship services; families go to church together every week.
There is something beautiful about places like this — they are not built for tourists; they are built for the people who call this place home. Visiting them gives you a glimpse into the real Kohima.
