From Sheki To Ganja – A Journey with no end
The night in Sheki had been long, and I finally made it to Sheki Guest Hotel, my abode in the city, after walking up a steep slope with wet grass all around. I was enchanted by the simplicity of this place, with its village life and hospitable people. I woke up late, around nine, and enjoyed a usual breakfast of fried eggs, bread with cheese and butter, and hot tea.
It was going to be a long day ahead as we had a two and a half hour journey to Ganja, along with a few places left to see in Sheki. Uslan was ready to guide us, and we hit the streets again. “Today, I take you to the garden of the candle trees. It has these tall wooden trees that look like candles; they are all over this place. We can also go to an entertainment park where families come to celebrate and enjoy holidays,” Uslan explained his plan for the day.
I agreed, and our black Mercedes zoomed past the open road towards the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. It felt like it would be a hot day, and indeed, the sun was shining brightly. I had to take off my leather jacket as it was getting warm.
We ventured into the park, where music played, and children enjoyed themselves on swings. It was situated close to a fast gushing stream, and people were drinking beer and taking pictures, enjoying their holiday. There was food, hot tea, cakes, and even ice creams available. After a leisurely tour of the park and two cups of hot tea, we moved towards the candle tree garden, which was wonderful. The garden was adorned with tall trees that resembled candles, hence the name.
I thoroughly enjoyed strolling around the garden, exploring the candle trees. The ground was soft with wet leaves and acorns strewn around, making it mushy. A brisk walk is important for a traveler, and I make it a point to walk 5km every day to keep fit.
Lunch was served late, around three o’clock, at our favorite restaurant in Sheki. I ordered lamb soup and kebab, leaving some leftovers for Uslan’s dinner. My guide has been instrumental in facilitating my journey, and I have grown to know Azerbaijan well. Our aim now was to reach Ganja by six o’clock, which was achievable if Uslan drove well. And indeed, he did. The road to Ganja was fast, with little traffic, and the green mountains along the way were a treat to watch. The ride was therapeutic.
Upon arrival, I checked into my hotel in Ganja, also known as Gence. I have one more day left to explore this wonderful town, which will be the final leg of my Azerbaijan odyssey.
