Discovering the INS Khukri Vessel Museum: A Tribute to Naval Valour in Diu
Tucked away on the picturesque island of Diu, part of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, lies a site that blends history, heroism, and the sea — the INS Khukri Vessel Museum. Often referred to as the Khukri Memorial, it honours the bravery of Indian Navy sailors during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War.
If you are exploring the coastal gems near Gujarat, as I recently did, this museum offers a deeply moving experience — combining maritime heritage with stunning ocean views. From the decommissioned warship turned exhibit to the powerful tales of sacrifice, it is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and patriots alike.
The Heroic History Behind INS Khukri
The story of INS Khukri begins with tragedy and ends in timeless remembrance.
During the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, the original INS Khukri — a Type 14 Blackwood-class frigate — was torpedoed by the Pakistani submarine PNS Hangor on 9 December 1971, about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Diu. The ship sank rapidly, claiming the lives of 18 officers and 176 sailors, including Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla.
In an extraordinary act of courage, Captain Mulla chose to go down with his ship after ensuring the evacuation of as many crew members as possible. For his supreme sacrifice, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.
A memorial was inaugurated on 15 December 1999 at Chakratirth Beach, featuring a scaled replica of the ship enclosed in glass. However, the site evolved significantly in 2022 when a decommissioned INS Khukri-class corvette — named in honour of the original vessel — was handed over to the Diu administration and transformed into a full-fledged museum ship.

This 91-metre-long vessel, commissioned in 1989 and decommissioned after more than three decades of service, now stands as the centrepiece of the memorial. Visitors can step aboard and explore its decks. Union Home Minister Amit Shah officially inaugurated the museum, marking it as a proud symbol of national remembrance.
Exploring Diu and Its Surroundings
As you approach the museum, the imposing silhouette of the grey warship against the blue sky and the Arabian Sea is unforgettable. The entrance features signboards detailing the entry fee — ₹50 for children (ages 5–11) and ₹100 for visitors aged 15 and above.
Once inside, you can board the ship via a ramp and wander through preserved areas such as the bridge, engine room, and crew quarters — offering a glimpse into life aboard a naval vessel. The museum is open from sunrise to sunset. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for visiting, both to avoid the heat and to enjoy softer light against the sea.
Diu itself is a charming blend of Portuguese colonial history and Indian vibrancy, making it an excellent destination for a day trip from Gujarat. The museum is perched on a hillock at Chakratirth Beach, known for its golden sands and gentle waves — perfect for a peaceful stroll after your visit.
Nearby attractions include:
- The imposing Diu Fort
- The echoing Naida Caves
- The Gothic-style St. Paul’s Church
All are within a short drive of the museum.
If travelling by air, Diu Airport connects directly to Mumbai. Alternatively, Diu can be reached by road from Ahmedabad in approximately 7–8 hours.
Reflections on Courage and Legacy
Standing on the deck of INS Khukri, with the sea breeze whispering stories of sacrifice, it is hard not to feel a deep sense of gratitude. This museum is not just about a ship — it is about resilience, duty, and honour.
In a region rich with layered history — from Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace in nearby Porbandar to Diu’s colonial past — the INS Khukri Vessel Museum adds a powerful chapter of modern heroism.
Whether you are a naval enthusiast, a traveller seeking meaningful destinations, or someone wishing to honour India’s defenders, this site leaves a lasting impression.
It is not merely a memorial of steel — it is a reminder that courage, once shown, echoes across generations.
