Dainthlen Falls – Where Nature Meets Legends

Just a short drive from th misty town of Cherrapunji (Sohra) lies one of Meghalaya’s most fascinating natural wonders – the Dainthlen Falls. Unlike most waterfalls that are celebrated purely for their scenic beauty, Dainthlen is remembered equally for the legend that flows with its waters.

The Roar of the Serpent

According to Khasi folklore, the falls are named after a giant serpent called U Thlen, who once lived in a nearby cave. This serpent was a symbol of greed, corruption, and evil, demanding sacrifices from the people. Tired of its tyranny, the brave villagers united, fought, and killed the serpent near this very spot. The stream that now rushes down the cliffs is said to mark the place where the serpent’s blood once flowed – turning the site into a symbol of freedom and courage.

A Natural Spectacle

Set against a landscape of rolling grassy meadows and sandstone cliffs, Dainthlen Falls offers a wide and dramatic cascade before plunging into a deep gorge. On misty days, the falls appear ghostly, wrapped in clouds. On sunny days, the water sparkles, and rainbows often dance in the spray. Unlike the towering vertical drop of Nohkalikai Falls, Dainthlen spreads out, allowing visitors to walk close to the roaring waters and feel their force.

A Journey Through Legend and Landscape

Few waterfalls in India carry such a vivid story of good triumphing over evil. The approach to the falls takes you through open countryside, offering sweeping vistas of the Khasi Hills. September is among the best times to visit, when the water is at its fullest force. But be cautious – the rocks near the edge can be slippery.
