A Tribute to the Hills: My Visit to Captain Sievizo Memorial

The journey from Kohima to Khonoma is filled with breathtaking landscapes, winding mountain roads, and villages that whisper stories of history. But among these scenic wonders lies a monument that stands tall โ€” not for its size, but for the weight of its legacy.
My stop at the Captain Sievizo Memorial was one of the most powerful moments of my trip.

Located on a ridge overlooking the deep green valleys of Nagaland, the memorial honours Captain Sievizo Solo, a legendary figure in the Naga struggle during the British colonial era. His story is one of courage, conviction, and an unwavering stand for the dignity of his people.

A Monument Carved in Courage

The memorial is striking โ€” a tall stone platform crowned with a statue of Captain Sievizo standing firm and resolute, gazing over the land he fought to protect. At the base of the structure are two granite plaques inscribed with his story.

As I stood near the monument, the wind carrying the scent of pine and cold mountain air, I imagined the moment described on those plaques.
The captain confronted foreign officers who demanded that he apologise for upholding the customs and beliefs of his people. He refused, saying he could not ask pardon for a sin he did not commit โ€” words that echo with bravery and identity.
His stand spoke not just for himself, but for every Naga.

Standing at the Viewpoint Pavilion

Just a short walk away from the memorial is a traditional Naga-style pavilion โ€” painted yellow, carved with tribal motifs, and facing the wide open valley.
You stand there, framed by wooden carvings, absorbing the grandeur of the land.

Inside, rustic wooden stools serve as seats, inviting travellers to rest and admire the panoramic view. From this spot, the horizon stretches into layers of rolling hills โ€” green, quiet, and eternal.
Sitting inside the pavilion, with sunlight filtering through the beams, I felt a deep sense of peace.

Natureโ€™s Tribute to a Hero

The hills around the memorial seem to bow in reverence. Surrounded by dense forests and terraced villages nestled within the folds of the mountains, the location feels chosen not by humans, but by the land itself.
The silence here is meaningful โ€” it carries the memory of Captain Sievizo and countless Naga ancestors who fought for their land, culture, and identity.
