My Escape to the Lakes of Dadra & Nagar Haveli

There is something magical about trading the chaos of city life for wide open skies and glassy waters. Last weekend, I did exactly that โ€” a quick drive from Daman into the heart of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

What I found wasnโ€™t just a lake; it was a whole serene world of reservoirs, rivers, and unexpected roadside surprises. Hereโ€™s my personal travel story, complete with the photos I couldnโ€™t stop clicking.

The Giant Warrior Who Stopped Me in My Tracks

The drive from Daman to Silvassa is short, but the moment you cross into Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the landscape changes. Palm trees give way to thick greenery, and suddenly you are surrounded by rolling hills and open fields.

Thatโ€™s when I slammed the brakes.

Standing tall on the roadside was a massive cut-out of a fierce warrior with a sword in his hand. I have no idea who the figure represents, but he is easily 20 feet tall and impossible to miss. Naturally, I had to snap a photo.

With the rural backdrop โ€” electric poles, dry bushes, and the perfect blue sky โ€” it looked like I had stepped onto a movie set.

Ten minutes later, I was back on the road, grinning like an idiot.

First Glimpse of the Wide River That Feels Like a Lake

As I got closer to the main water body, the road hugged the edge of what looked like a massive river.

But this was no ordinary river โ€” it was the Daman Ganga reservoir, stretching out for kilometres. The water was calm, reflecting the hazy hills in the distance.

A few small boats zipped across the water, leaving white trails behind them, while cattle grazed on the far bank and egrets dotted the mudflats. The air smelled of wet earth and fresh leaves.

I parked near a tiny viewpoint, sat on the grass for a while, and simply breathed.

No honking.
No crowds.
Just nature doing its thing.

The Star of the Show: Dudhni Lake and Its Rainbow Fleet

Then came the highlight โ€” Dudhni Lake.

This is the big attraction that everyone comes for, and trust me, the photos donโ€™t lie. From the upper viewpoint, the lake stretches endlessly, framed by dry rolling hills that almost look African during the dry season.

The water is so still that it mirrors the sky perfectly.

Down at the jetty, a whole fleet of colourful tourist boats waited โ€” bright blue, yellow, green, and white โ€” each with cheerful canopies and plastic chairs.

I hopped onto one for a thirty-minute ride. The boatman took us right into the middle of the lake, where the only sounds were the water lapping against the hull and the distant hum of other boats.

Later, I walked along the shore where the boats were parked. It felt picture-perfect โ€” like a postcard. Kids were playing near the edge, locals were chatting, and the sun slowly turned everything golden.

I could easily have stayed there until sunset.

Why This Is a Hidden Gem

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is still not on most tourist radars. There are no long queues, no aggressive vendors โ€” just friendly locals and nature on full display.

The lakes here are actually part of the Daman Ganga river system, the same water that flows past the lighthouse in Daman that I had visited earlier.

It felt like completing a beautiful loop โ€” from the coast to the lakes and back again.
