The Scarecrows of Mayong

Mayong exudes small village life. Most women dry sarson seeds in their front yards, which are then crushed by local machines and the oil is sold in nearby shops in bottles. I spotted a few huts with large scarecrows erected on the side and one inside the fields itself. They definitely added to the mystique of Mayong.

The locals also worship Kali idols and most have them placed in front of their huts. Most people farm and fish for food and keep cows and goats for milk. The women wear cotton saris, and the men wear vests and cotton dhotis. The scarecrows add a lot of charm to the village.

The vibe is very calm and slow. The villages are full of greenery and as you drive through the road there is a thick cover of trees and foliage all around. There is enough water in the many ponds, and villagers make do with low-level groundwater as well. This is generally used for irrigation and farming.

Initially, the scarecrows really spooked me, but when I went near them, I saw they were harmless—just there to scare away the birds so that they do not destroy the crops or steal the oil seeds.

It was a great day to capture the humdrum of village life. I had a ball just roaming freely on the road, taking pictures. So enjoy my curious gaze on the village of Mayong and its way of life.
